Book Description:

Food writer Maggie Marrion is just getting back on her feet after a horrible year, or two, or three. With their twentieth reunion approaching, she invites four of her closest friends from college for a weekend at her beach cabin. What she doesn’t expect is her best friends, artist Quinn Dayton and part-time erotica novelist, Selah Elmore, to play matchmaker. The two plot a surprise that will make the weekend, and her life, a lot more interesting.

Gil Morrow, former grunge musician turned history professor, joins them as Selah’s date for the weekend. After coming face to face with the one who got away, he decides he’s waited long enough to get the girl. With the support of old friends, a few wishing rocks, the world’s largest burrowing clam, and a hot lumberjack thrown into the mix, Gil reminds Maggie that forty-something isn’t too old for second chances.

Can we learn to love the life we have and let go of who we expected to be? What happens when the generation from The Breakfast Club and Reality Bites meets The Big Chill? Come spend a weekend with these Generation X-ers as they share laughter, tears, life’s ups and downs, old stories, and new beginnings.

In between the lines …

I know what your thinking …

What are Geoducks? Well, I did a little research. According to Wikipedia, a geoduck is a species of very large, edible, saltwater clam. I goggled a picture of them. Uh, I’ll let you investigate that on your own. 😉

The beautiful blue hue and unusually white ringed rocks on the book cover of Geoduck’s really captured my interest. Lucky for me, I was at the perfect place to enjoy this captivating story of old friends and rekindled chances. The Beach.

Geoduck’s main character Maggie begins her day waking up to the sound of the ocean, a sweetly attractive neighbor, and her anxious for a walk dog, Biscuit. She feels completely content on her island home, or so she thinks. Sounds perfect.

A visit from her group of friends from college stirs memories of younger times and second chances. The story resembles a modern gen-xer take like “The Big Chill” movie with humous antidotes of college days with friends and island life with a few “wishing rocks.”

WishingRocksWishing Rocks It’s a rock with a single perfect unbroken stripe all the way around the the rock. For a rock to qualify as a wishing rock, there can be no splits, no outrunners, no faint second lines on the rock.

Reading Geoduck’s was like wrapping up in a warm blanket and sitting on an Adirondack chair on Maggie’s porch, listening to the waves. It read familiar, and every character’s dialogue connected me to the scene as though I was part of it. The battering of friends and excitement of renewed love flowed among the pages like the picturesque waves and salt air of Maggie’s island.

Maggie’s friends seem to lend her their strengths in each conversation. She’s led to see life is more than just being content.

Cast of college friends:

Selah- single, professor, writes erotica pirate novels. I loved how Shela’s was out-spoken, vivacious and straight-forward.

Ouinn- Maggie’s closest friend, artist. Her quintessential best friend who always sees out-of-the-box.

Jo & Ben- married with children. Jo and Ben are a very relatable couple trying their best to wade through being parents and a couple.

Gil- divorced, professor and still has a thing for Maggie. Gil was sweet, charming and swoon worthy. I loved that he never gave up on the one girl who got away. It was easy to see why Maggie liked him.

The best part to Geoduck’s was the radiating friendships and a quaint use of “wishing rocks” which help Maggie’s realize that she can still be happy on her island and open her heart to love. A perfect beach vacation read!

4 Stars!
