Kate Burke is done making bad decisions. Thirty years old and belatedly determined to grow up, the successful travel writer and one-time party girl returns to work at the remote Ponderosa Pines Ranch to reassess her life.
Although her kitchen/cabin staff is lacking and the workload never relents, Kate’s main challenge is Shane Maddox, the ruggedly handsome and doggedly stubborn ranch foreman. Instantly at odds, they battle over everything from ceiling fans to bothersome bats—studiously ignoring the sparks they generate with each confrontation.
They can’t explain their explosive physical chemistry, but after a few frustrated weeks they can’t deny it either. Their solution? Just once. They’ll get past their inconvenient lust and move on.
Kate’s been trying to think with her head instead of her hormones, but is this just another bad decision in a lifetime of careless choices? Has she really changed at all?
Set in the striking and serene hills of southern Colorado, Julianna Keyes’ debut novel offers a sizzling and satisfying tale of unexpected chemistry and the power of second chances. Her characters will get under your skin and into your heart. Just once may not be enough for you either.

Author’s take on the leading man:
Shane Maddox is strictly a figment of my imagination (tragic, I know!). Many years ago someone told me that I walked “like I knew where I was going,” and those words have always stuck in my head. I imagine the same applies to Shane—the very embodiment of the strong, silent type, he walks with a purpose, gets the job done, and keeps to himself.
Shane’s been the foreman at Ponderosa Pines Ranch for the past eight years, and dreams of buying out the current owners when they retire. He’s got his heart set on this goal and won’t be distracted, limiting himself to casual affairs with women who expect nothing more than a good time. When Kate arrives on the ranch he knows instantly that she isn’t his type. If he’s being honest, she’s out of his league. Blonde, beautiful, and rich, she brings his insecurities to the surface.
Once en route to a promising career as a physiotherapist, he’d left those dreams behind to work at Ponderosa Pines, and worries that he’s now “just” a ranch hand. He’ll feel better when it’s his name on the deed, but in the meantime he doubts that someone like Kate could truly be satisfied with a man who lives in an Airstream and has three pairs of cargo pants on a strict rotation.
Shane is serious—maybe even stern—and used to calling the shots, but he’s learning to bend, and maybe even crack the occasional joke. He’s aware enough to know that he has to soften his rough edges if he wants to be worthy of a woman like Kate, but he’s been doing things his way for so long—what if it’s too late to change?
